TikTok Provides Users Power to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-made videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform revealed that it now features in excess of 1 billion AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a global launch. This advancement comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as artificially created. In total, more than 100 m media items are added to the app each day, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by opening the “manage topic” setting in the platform and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that currently be modified under the setting cover news, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules oblige users to tag convincing AI-made content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an AI-generated watermark to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This step is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is additionally launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to develop informative material about ethical AI use. This project will assist non-profit groups specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has justified its safety measures, during controversy over plans to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection division in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
